Overview

Chefchaouen is a “Tarifit” or “Tamazight” nickname derived from the terms “Isakson” or “Echaouen,” which refer to “the horns,” and “Chef,” which means “look at.” Chefchaouen, therefore, means “look at the horns,” alluding to the region’s two dominant mountain summits. In recent years, Chefchaouen has gained the nickname “Morocco’s Blue Pearl.” It is among the finest well-known Moroccan cities on earth, famous for its traditional blue and white houses that lend a serene and appealing ambiance to its alleyways.

Chefchaouen, located under the rugged peaks of the Rif, is one of Morocco’s most beautiful places, and an artistic, blue-washed mountain village that feels like its own planet. While tourism has taken root, the balance between convenience and authenticity is exactly perfect. With red-tiled roofs, bright-blue homes, and small passageways converging on lively Plaza Uta El Hammam and its rebuilt kasbah, the ancient medina is a joy of Moroccan and Andalusian influence. Long renowned to backpackers for its easy access to kif (cannabis), the town has swiftly gentrified and now provides a variety of great lodging, nice cuisine, much to do, and no hassles, making it a great alternative to a frenetic multicity trip. This is an excellent location for relaxation, exploration, and day excursions to the cool forested hills.

Tour Plan

Explore the Blue Streets

The most important reason for visiting Chefchaouen is its picturesque streets lined with blue-painted buildings. There are several explanations for why the walls are blue. Some argue that it is for practical purposes, such as keeping mosquitos at bay or making homes cooler.

Others believe that the blue depicts the sky and heaven, as well as the hues of the Mediterranean sea and the neighboring Ras el Maa waterfall. Locals now keep painting their houses blue, either to honor these traditions or to lure visitors who come to Chefchaouen for its set of photos streets. Chefchaouen is more quiet and calm than other Moroccan cities, so you may spend hours walking the blue lanes and photographing lovely porches and doors in the sun. The city's blue homes are unquestionably the best activity can do in Chefchaouen!

View the sunrise or sunset in Chefchaouen.

Chefchaouen's sunrise and sunset are equally wonderful periods of the day. Include this as one of the activities on your Chefchaouen agenda. Get up early in the morning, go to your riad's rooftop, and see the most beautiful sunrise of your vacation. Alternatively, experience this lovely scene from a higher vantage point by taking one of the many walks out of town into the Riff Mountains. This is recommendable for a spectacular perspective of the city!

The Spanish Mosque

The Spanish Mosque is a stunning structure perched on a hill overlooking Chefchaouen. During the conflict, the mosque was erected in the 1920s. Nevertheless, it was never used and currently remains abandoned, overlooking the city. It's a short 30-minute trek to the summit, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views.

Seeing the sunset here is wonderful, as the golden hues hit the earthy Riff mountains in the backdrop. However, because it is among the best common attractions to do in Chefchaouen at this time of year, there may be a throng. If you prefer peace and quiet, go on an early morning trek to witness the sunrise instead.

Medina shopping

Visit Medina's small, azure, winding streets and souks! Although the souks are not as large as those in other Moroccan cities such as Fes, they remain a prominent shopping destination. This is due to the fact that it provides various indigenous products that are not accessible elsewhere in Morocco, such as wool clothes, handmade blankets, and weaved baskets.

Amid the handicrafts, you'll frequently discover containers of vibrant paint powders in a range of pastel colors, creating a lovely sight against the blue walls. Tourists enjoy goat cheese, which is presented with a variety of cuisines. It's definitely worth a try, and it's a wonderful thing to do in Chefchaouen.

The Kasbah Museum

The Kasbah, a historic Moroccan fort, is located in the main square. This structure has performed several functions throughout the years, most memorably as a jail, and is now an anthropological museum and art gallery. Inside, there are also exquisite Spanish-style gardens that give a wonderful respite from the city. Discover the unique history of this region via the presentation of historical relics, clothes, equipment, and regional decorations and crafts. Climbing the fort tower provides breathtaking views of the city.

Plaza Uta El-Hammam

Many events take place in and around Chefchaouen's main square, Plaza Uta El-Hammam. The square, located in the heart of the medina, is flanked by restaurants, shops, the Kasbah, and the Grand Mosque. The Grand Mosque is presently used for religious prayer and is therefore not available to tourists; nonetheless, its distinctive octagonal minaret may be seen from the square. Sit in the heart of the cobbled plaza beside the tree and people gaze for a vacation from touring - a wonderful thing to do in Chefchaouen.

Taste Delightful Food

Moroccan cuisine has an unmistakable taste. People bake fresh bread in wood-fired ovens on every corner of the charming streets. Restaurants feature traditional Moroccan foods such as couscous, seafood, spices, and vegetables. Enjoy dining based out of a locally produced tagine bowl while resting on gorgeous Moroccan cushions in romantically lighted dining rooms - a very genuine approach to learning Moroccan culture and Chefchaouen. Don't forget to try some freshly brewed mint tea. This is a Moroccan custom, not only for the social component but also for the health advantages.

Take the enchanting bus ride to Fes

If you're going around Morocco, using the local bus to or from Fes is a wonderful option. The breathtaking sights you'll witness as you journey through Morocco's magnificent landscapes are definitely enough for a couple of hours on a bus. Even better is the spectacular vista of Chefchaouen as you enter the city for the first time. Catch one of its CTM buses (the largest operator in Morocco) for a comfortable four-hour journey.
